Where the relationship between the functional disturbance and emotional upset is external, it is easily recognized and becomes amenable to treatment. However, where the disturbance is deeply rooted in the psyche, the diagnosis of the physical disorder may remain obscure and the condition then becomes resistant to the ordinary forms of therapy.
