Abstract An unusual, phenol-soluble lipopolysaccharide has been isolated from the cell wall of the plant pathogen, Xanthomonas campestris. After mild acid hydrolysis, two rare sugars, 3-acetamido-3,6-dideoxy-d-galactose and d-rhamnose, were obtained in crystalline form. d-Galacturonic acid and d-glucose were identified as additional minor components. Approximately 97.5% of the total weight of the polymer was accounted for on the basis of the products recovered.
