Later, in 1856, Virchow pointed out the rôle of the embolus as the cause of lung infarcts. Over a period of many years numerous clinical, pathological, and experimental studies have established an accepted anatomical and clinical picture for pulmonary infarction. The typical pathological appearance of the lesion cannot be disputed. The necessary rôle of impaired pulmonary circulation in the development of the disease is also well established.
