This paper provides a critical examination of three overlapping streams of discourse relating to sustainability. Each uses a somewhat different metaphor, such as the dimensions, forms or pillars of sustainability, the triple bottom line, or the maintenance of various types of capital. In the quest for sustainability, it is important to be aware of both the insights and the limitations of each of these streams of discourse.
