About 5,000 experimental operations have been carried out on dogs in the last 23 years.1 The facts here presented were determined by observations made directly on the heart. What actually happened in these experiments determined the facts which make up this presentation. With this foundation the facts should have enduring value.To illustrate how the observation of a fact destroys a preconceived idea, the following incident is cited: On June 21, 1955, a 65 year old physician had anginal pain.
