It is well known that this term stems from the early concept of Bamberger1and Virchow2of a catarrhal or mucous inflammation of the papilla of Vater, a concept which appears to have been an elaboration, on the grounds of anatomic studies, of the so-called "gastroduodenal catarrh and jaundice" of the earlier Irish clinicians, notably Stokes3and Graves.4The earlier literature has been adequately reviewed by Eppinger5and Lichtman.6Attention may be called again to the clear statement of Flindt7in 1890, that...Bibliography1.
