It is a systemic disease characterized by manifold physiologic alterations and often by multiple symptoms. Despite its systemic nature, rheumatoid arthritis seldom causes death. A commonly held opinion is that patients who have rheumatoid arthritis rarely die of the disease. Many thousands of patients with rheumatoid arthritis have been examined at the Mayo Clinic during the past 25 years, but during this time necropsy has been performed in only 30 cases of rheumatoid arthritis.
