Findings suggest that the overall climate at a large Midwestern research university remains unwelcoming for students of color in spite of special programs to enhance their experience. This paper confirms a well-established trend in American higher education—the need to address the unwelcoming university climate at the level of deeply held, underlying belief systems in the university culture at large. It suggests actions for change on a university-wide scale.
