This is one of the monumental monographs of American neurology. In its second edition the work has been so completely rewritten as almost to constitute an entirely new book. It is one of the most thoroughgoing discussions of the aphasias and allied subjects that have ever been presented in any language. After a brief consideration of the historical aspects of the subject the normal neural mechanisms are presented. There is then a concise discussion of agnosia, apraxia and aphasia, the meanings of the terms and their patholophysiologic connotations. The author tells in detail how the patient should be examined for these deficiencies. Lastly he presents in detail the evidence, both from the literature and from his own clinical and pathologic experience, on which his conclusions are based.
