This article, adapted from a chapter in How Did This Happen? Terrorism and the New War, provides commentary on the events of September 11, 2001, and looks to the future of life in the U.S. in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. The author contends that in the years ahead: 1) there will continue to be anti-American terrorists with global reach; 2) these terrorists are likely to have access to and the means to use chemical and biological weapons; and 3) economic and societal disruption created by the attacks themselves and related events will provide encouragement for the terrorist networks.
