Revision and publication of this edition of Standard Nomenclature of Diseases and Operations was carried out as the result of a decision made at the Fifth National Conference on Medical Nomenclature, which was held under the auspices of the American Medical Association in Chicago in June, 1948. The revision was carried out under the direction of an Editorial Advisory Board and editors appointed by the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association. Twenty-three committees comprised of 82 outstandingly qualified specialists participated in this revision. One of the changes in this edition is the inclusion of the code numbers of the International Statistical Classification of. Diseases, Injuries and Causes of Death parenthetically and in an appendix for cross reference to Standard numbers.
