Violence Prevention in the Schools: A Review of Selected Programs and Procedures

This article reviews selected commercially published and research literature curricula and procedures available for violence prevention efforts in the school setting. A primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention model is posited as a useful paradigm for school-based efforts. The review addresses those programs and procedures considered to have potential for effective outcomes when implemented as a part of a multidimensional, ecologically oriented violence prevention program. Lack of strong, longitudinal research support for most violence prevention curricula and procedures is noted. Implications for school psychologists are discussed.
