Voluntary work is increasingly associated with a desire for meaningful activity. An empirical study comparing volunteers with the general population shows meaningfulness to be higher among the former; among other things, they are also more self-transcendent than the latter. Furthermore, informative differences can be found as regards the sources of meaning of volunteers in parishes and church welfare, hospices, and secular contexts.
