The demand for modular solid-state power converters with built-in expansion capabilities has prompted interest in the operation and control of systems comprising two or more modules connected in parallel. An investigation of the transients occurring in such a system as a result of the switching online of individual converter modules is reported. Circuit models were derived in order to evaluate basic dynamic processes, to obtain worst-case transient conditions, and to develop convenient design tools. The models and the design equations were tested using a personal computer-based circuit simulation software package, and results are given. Key experimental results were verified on a laboratory prototype circuit.>
