Patient access to the medical record has a demonstrated effect on patient satisfaction and the physician-patient relationship. A study of 200 patients attending an outpatient clinic confirmed that most patients would like to receive a copy of their record, while slightly more than half felt there was a relationship between having the record and quality of care. The implications of giving patients a copy of their record is discussed.
