Neutral injection of fast atoms into a toroidal plasma can produce, after ionization, a double-humped velocity distribution with appreciable spatial inhomogeneity in the fast-ion component. Fluid instability may be excited in the Kelvin-Helmholtz and temperature gradient drift modes, and microinstability may appear in the drift wave and in the quasiperpendicular acoustic mode.
Thomas H. Stix (1973) studied this question.
