In this article, the popular children's book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (J. K. Rowling, 1997) is discussed as the basis for an activity in teaching and eliciting empathy from beginning‐level school counseling students. A description of the application of the book to this activity, the students' evaluations, and teaching recommendations and limitations are reported .
