The Use of Egyptian Blue and Lapis Lazuli in the Middle Ages - The Wall Paintings of the San Saba Church in Rome

AbstractAbstractIn the wall paintings of the church of San Saba (Rome), dating to the first half of the eighth century AD, Egyptian blue and lapis lazuli have been detected mixed together within the same pictorial layer. These are the oldest western paintings where lapis lazuli has been used as a blue pigment. This paper cites other instances of the use of lapis lazuli in ninth-century paintings and of Egyptian blue in late mediaeval paintings. Thus the dates for the commencement of the use of lapis lazuli and the discontinuation of Egyptian blue are significantly modified. Jahrhundert sowie Nachweise von Ägyptischblau in Mittelalterlichen Gemälden werden zitiert. Der Zeitraum, in denen die Verwendung von Ultramarin als Malpigment begann und die von Ägyptischblau endete müssen korrigiert werden. Die Anwesenheit beider Pigmente innerhalb einer Malschicht zeigt darüber hinaus, dass der Wechsel nicht plötzlich erfolgte, sondern dass beide Pigmente innerhalb des gleichen Zeitraumes und der gleichen geographischen Region nebeneinander existierten.En las pinturas murales de la iglesia de San Saba (Roma), que pueden ser fechadas en la primera mitad del siglo VIII d. C., se ha detectado el uso de azul egipcio y de lapislázuli mezclados en la misma capa pictórica. Estas son las pinturas occidentales más antiguas en las que ha sido usado lapislázuli como pigmento azul. Este artículo menciona otros ejemplos de uso de lapislázuli en pinturas del siglo noveno y de azul egipcio en pinturas tardomedievales; consecuentemente las fechas de inicio en el uso del lapislázuli y de decadencia del empleo del azul egipcio se modifican sustancialmente. Lo que es más, la presencia de ambos pigmentos en las pinturas murales de San Saba prueba que el cambio de uno a otro no ocurrió de repente, y que el uso de estos dos pigmentos coexistió en los mismos contextos cronológicos y geográficos.
