In recent years many an organic chemist has had thrust him the obligation of becoming at least an empirical, often with little preparation for some of the possible pitfalls he may encounter. In general he has to the occasion, frequently with conspicuous success. often he has had the desire to go beyond the purely stage but without convenient facilities for acquiring the background.
