This paper presents a methodological review of the associative relationship between social support and psychological trauma. Because of the paucity of such studies, this review begins with the findings on the nature of social support, and then the general outcomes of this association. Next, the relationship between support and human physiology is presented. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the research specific to psychological trauma and social support in the areas of combat, sexual abuse, and battering. Methodological issues and limitations are discussed in each section.
