Despite advances in early diagnosis and primary treatment of breast cancer with surgery, radiation therapy, or both modalities, more than one-third of newly diagnosed patients will develop recurrent or systemic disease and ultimately die. All these patients are potential candidates for some form of systemic adjuvant therapy involving the use of cytotoxic drugs and/or endocrine therapy after definitive local treatment The Third International Conference on Adjuvant Therapy of Primary Breast Cancer in St. Gallen, Switzerland, March 2-5, 1988, brought together experts from all over the world to present their most recent data and to discuss the remaining challenges that confront both clinicians and basic scientists.
