ABSTRACT The assessment of practical skills is often neglected. A contributing factor is the unsatisfactory nature of the assessment instruments commonly used. The objective structured practical examination (OSPE) is a practical, reliable and valid alternative. The main features of the OSPE are: 1. (1) separate assessment of process and product through observation of performance and assessment of end result;2. (2) adequate sampling of skills and content to be tested;3. (3) an analytical approach to the assessment;4. (4) objectivity;5. (5) feedback to teacher and students. The OSPE approach merits consideration in any subject where practical skills should be assessed.
