Human resource information systems (HRISs) have the potential to be the mechanism by which transnational entities monitor and deploy their personnel in order to attain and sustain a competitive advantage. A systematic survey of leven US-based multinational corporations shows that progress is being made in the design, development and implementation of global human resource information systems, tools that can accommodate the increasingly complicated and geographically dispersed nature of business. Nevertheless, for firms trying to strike the balance between global integration and local responsiveness, there are a host of operational issues and strategic considerations for HRISs that still need to be addressed. These factors are outlined and implications for researchers and practitioners are discussed.
