Research into the use made of dictionaries by learners of Modern Foreign Languages indicates that there is a need for dedicated training programmes in the use of dictionaries as a learning tool. Such programmes will be designed to encourage learners to make use of their dictionaries in a positive and productive way during the whole of the learning process, not just in the more traditional way as a verification tool or gap-filling reference book.
