The Fermi liquid theory of Landau, extended by Silin to include the Coulomb interaction, is applied to investigate the effect of the Coulomb interaction on various properties of an electron gas. By assuming a simple form for the “correlation function”, which characterizes the correlation effect in this formalism, the corrections for specific heat (effective mass), spin paramagnetic susceptibility, Korringa relation and the dispersion of plasma oscillation are calculated. It is shown that the effect of the Coulomb interaction on specific heat is quite small, while that on spin paramagnetism is appreciable. The effective mass of electrons on the Fermi surface is shown to be smaller than the bare mass, if the small momentum transfer processes contribute dominantly to the correlation function.
