Abstract Following the growth of Islamic consciousness in Great Britain, expressed particularly in the protests over the publication of Salman Rushdie's novel, The Satanic Verses, but also expressed in the foundation of the Islamic Party of Britain, there has been interest in the size of the Islamic community living there. Estimates have varied between one and two millions. However, using a variety of sources, the present article argues that a figure of between 550,000 and 750,000 is more likely.
