Objective: The aim of the present study is to adapt the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale to Turkish, examine the reliability and validity of the scale among bipolar mood disorder patients and examine the relationship between mood stabilizers\' blood drug levels and adherence to treatment. Methods: The sample comprised 59 bipolar mood disorder (BMD) patients in Gaziantep University Sahinbey Research and Practice Hospital Psychiatry Department Mood Disorder Clinic, who met the study requirements and who was diagnosed with BMD. The inclusion criterion for patients was to be euthymic at the time of the study. After examining the linguistic equivalence of the scale, its reliability and validity were assessed. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were performed for reliability analysis; factor analysis was performed in order to determine construct validity, and Kappa agreement analysis was performed for external validity. Results: The internal consistency coefficient of the scale was found to be 0.62 while test-retest reliability coefficients were found to range between 0.64 and 0.96. In factor analysis, the KMO value was found to be 0.636; Bartlett\'s test result was found to be 29.312 and the items intercorrelated with each other in a perfect way. It was also found out that most of the variables had common features, loaded on a single factor and the total variance rate of the scale had a sufficient value. Responses of patients\' relatives and patients\' blood drug levels were taken as criterion for external validity and a statistically significant agreement was found between these criteria and patients\' MMAS. Conclusion: On the basis of these results, it was concluded that Morisky Medication Adherence Scale is a valid and reliable measurement instrument for bipolar disorder and is recommended to be used in the clinic and research.
