SUMMARY The effects of high dose electron irradiation on frozen hydrated specimens have been studied. Samples which when dry are very stable to the electron beam are found to be severely etched in the presence of ice. Mass loss of ice greatly exceeds the rate expected from sublimation, and is caused by radiolysis. The active molecular species that are formed in this process attack material in contact with ice.
