Abstract An ion exchange resin bag technique was compared to six other methods for estimating N availability. Under a controlled greenhouse environment and with well‐mixed soils, the resin technique correlated well with more traditional N‐availability indices. However, resin bags on site in three forest stands yielded different N‐availability estimates than those in the greenhouse. This suggests that the resin bag method may be sensitive to on‐site conditions not discerned by more widely accepted laboratory techniques.
