Census data from 1960 and 1970 and Current Population Survey data from 1980 are used to study recent changes in the organization of men's lives. Large changes are found, with much less time being spent living in families with children present and more time being spent outside of marriage. These changes are pervasive across educational levels, racial categories, and geographic areas, although the rates of change are not uniform. Several implications of these changes for individuals, families, and society are discussed.
