Abstract Increasing numbers of dementia units are being built, many with attached outdoor space. Some are successful in providing for users' needs; others less so. The Alzheimer's Garden Audit Tool (AGAT) provides a relatively simple evaluative framework for assessing whether a garden incorporates those design elements and qualities that are necessary for a successful dementia care garden. The rationale for including items on this checklist-tool is explained. The possible uses are discussed. The tool is presented in its relatively preliminary state in the hope that people will use it and send their comments to the author for modification and improvement.
