This paper presents the first systematic study relating myxedema to coronary artery disease. It reviews the autopsy records of 38 white women with myxedema and a pathological diagnosis of chronic thyroiditis or thyroid atrophy and fibrosis. There was a statistically significant increase in coronary narrowing in myxedema patients when compared with age-, sex-, and race-specific controls. This increase was entirely related to the marked increase in severity of coronary narrowing in myxedema hypertensive patients when compared with hypertensive controls, despite similar ages, heart weights, and left ventricular thicknesses. Myxedema did not appear to predispose to coronary artery disease in the normotensive group.
