Emergence of Autobiographical Memory at Age 4

Abstract

Evidence is presented that autobiographical memory develops around the age of 4 years in Western societies, bringing to an end what has traditionally been identified as the period of infantile amnesia. Empirical research shows that episodic memory exists prior to 4 years. It is proposed that autobiographical memory represents a function different from simple episodic memory. Implications for further research are discussed.
