Abstract A taxonomy of 43 multiple-choice item-writing rules was developed on the basis of an analysis of 46 references in the educational measurement literature. In this comparative review, the results of 96 theoretical and empirical studies were analyzed to determine if support existed for each rule. In some instances, rules were revised, and for nearly one half the rules, no research was found.
