This paper proposes and implements an embedded wireless access control system using a combination of RFID and MMS technologies. The RFID and MMS sections are each controlled by a cost effective AT89C52 microcontroller. The microcontroller in RFID section is responsible for reading the user tag information, searching the read information in a memory chip for a match and triggering the microcontroller in MMS section accordingly while the microcontroller in MMS section is responsible for issuing AT commands to Quectel M33 cellular engine for capturing the user image and transferring the image to owner mobile phone using MMS, a multimedia service of GSM network. A decision is finally made by the owner either to grant or deny access to the user by sending a text message to the access control system.
