Stable triarylamminium salts may be used as convenient one-electron oxidants for a range of organic molecules. Synthesis and characterisation of perchlorate and hexachloroantimonate salts of the tris-(p-bromophenyl)amminium cation (p-BrC6H4)3N+ are described in detail. The hexachloroantimonate is easier to prepare and is much the more stable, both thermally and photochemically.
