Abstract The Compton profiles of MoKα x-rays inelastically scattered from a sample of oriented pyrolytic graphite and from a single crystal of diamond are compared with theoretical predictions based upon Slater wave-functions. All the experimental profiles are very similar, as predicted, verifying that the asphericities of the electron momentum distributions in both materials are small when the contributions of all the electrons are included. Measurements are presented of the fine structure observed when the energy lost by the photons slightly exceeds the binding energy of the K electrons.
