After a few remarks about the precise definition of a modern concept (damnatio memoriae) from ancient realities (damnati, abolitio memoriae), this introduction deals with a selection of examples on erasure and methodological or historiographical problems. These examples are founded on the constitution of an epigraphical and literary databank from a geographical perspective (by Roman provinces), and give the evidence of a political, juridical and sociological process.
