This introductory article provides a multidisciplinary and international lens by which to view the social entrepreneurship phenomenon. It offers a brief overview of the current research to highlight how social innovation and new social value creation are the underpinnings of the social entrepreneurship phenomenon. A focused summary of each of the articles presented in this special issue is described along with their potential contribution for future research on social entrepreneurship.
