Selection of the variables to be measured and specification of the sensors to make those measurements are two important issues in the implementation of an automated weather station network. Design decisions are reviewed in the context of the Oklahoma Mesonet, a state-wide network serving multiple purposes and consisting of more than 100 remote stations. Sensor specifications and field deployment criteria are described for eight core variables, several supplemental variables, and a variety of associated field equipment.
