It is shown that almost all features of the quark and lepton masses can be satisfactorily and simply explained without family symmetry, including the threefold mass hierarchy among the generations, and the relations m_^0m₁^0, m_^03mₒ^0, m₄^013m₃^0, mₔ^0/mₓ^0m₃^0/m₁^0, tan₂m₃^{0mₒ^0}, V₂₁mₒ^{0/m₁^0}, and Vₔ₁V₂₁Vₔₒ. Various aspects of the group theory of SO (10) play an essential role in explaining these relations. There are distinctive and testable predictions for tan and the neutrino mixing angles.
