There are deficiencies about traditional algorithms in speed and accuracy, so a new algorithm for edge detection is proposed. Firstly the source image is decomposed by wavelet lifting transform, and then the wavelet modulus maximum algorithm is used for high-frequency information and the Canny operator is used for low-frequency information during edge detection. Lifting algorithm speeds the image decomposition; the self-adaptive processing of update operators well reserves the local structural feature information; when the image is decomposed, column and row transformations reduce the requirement for memory and the computational complexity; the different algorithms being respectively used for high-frequency and low-frequency component make precision of edge detection higher. The results of experiment show that the algorithm is faster and more accurate than Canny operator and traditional wavelet algorithm in edge extraction.
