This is a background to biometrics technologies for those that are fairly new to the subject. There is always hype around emerging technologies — biometrics is no exception. Often those with the loudest voices have major interests in seeing it adopted. This is no surprise, but it can give a distorted picture of what something actually does (i.e. ‘it solves all your problems’) and whether it actually fits the requirements.
