Fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) from mammalian liver reveal similar protein characteristics (amino acid composition, isoelectric points around 7, Mr ca. 14 kDa) and are immunologically related. The protein from bovine liver binds two molecules of longchain fatty acids with high affinities in 1 binding site. Ionic interactions of the bovine FABP with fatty acids can be blocked by modification of the protein with the arginine-specific reagent phenylglyoxal. The protein may interact with intracellular membranes as FABP was detected in mitochondria of bovine liver cells.
