The theory of primary solid solutions is applied to the de Haas-van Alphen effect in dilute alloys. The experimental results are largely in agreement with the theory, except where there is the possibility of the existence of a bound state round the solute atoms. The de Haas-van Alphen effect appears to be well suited for studying this phenomenon as well as the effect of solutes from different rows of the periodic table.
