By the administration of 3 diets containing varying quantities of protein to 4 men, 69 to 76 years old, over a period of six months, the authors determined by daily nitrogen balance tests that diets below.7 gm. Per kilogram of body weight resulted in excess nitrogen loss, that diets containing .7 gm. Resulted in slow and incomplete recovery from nitrogen depletion, and suggest that the minimal requirement for elderly people should be I.4 gm. of protein per kilogram of weight per day. this paper was presented at the second annual scientific meeting of the gerontological society in chicago, november 5-6, 1949.
