In July 1989, an Australian surgical team successfully performed an reduced-size liver transplantation in a 17-month-old infant, using portion of his mother's liver. The authors describe, with illustrations, operative procedure in the donor, the preparation of the graft, and the procedure in the recipient. They discuss the implications of this and others for liver transplantation in children, for whom treatment of-stage liver disease is hampered by a shortage of cadaveric organs, and the ethical issues involved in living related donor transplantation.
