Theorizing Gender in Tourism Research

This paper builds on earlier work by the authors and on the subsequent literature. It argues that a gendered perspective provides a powerful tool in assisting us to understand the nature and consequences of the relationship between tourism development and social processes. Within this perspective the paper seeks three broad objectives namely; to provide a critique of the current state of gender analysis in tourism research; to advance further gender discourse in tourism; and to evaluate recent theoretical advances and empirical analyses of gender within tourism Both in theoretical and practical terms, the position of gender within tourism development processes is viewed as a challenge for the millennium.
