On the basis of asymptotic formulas of transfer theory for diffuse light fluxes in an optically thick layer, the expression for the light absorption parameter is derived. Using the formula for optical thickness obtained by M. D. King gives the possibility of obtaining the volume absorption and scattering coefficients for clouds, using the flux measurements at cloud top and bottom. The accuracy of these formulas is investigated. The method of determination of optical cloud parameters is applied to aircraft spectral radiation measurements in cloud layers. The spectral dependences of scattering and absorption coefficients are calculated for four experiments. The strong spectral dependence of scattering coefficient and high values of absorption coefficient are obtained. These values of true absorption can explain the so-called “anomalous shortwave cloud absorption.”
