Abstract America is aging, an achievement worth celebrating-or is it? The purpose of this article is to develop a profile of elder abuse via a selected review of the available literature and research since the concept was first introduced in the mid-1970s. The topics presented in this article are (a) societal trends that reveal future and historical perspectives of elder abuse, (b) definitions of the concept, (c) legislation, (d) research (investigative endeavors), (e) profiles of the abused and abuser based on identified common character traits, (f) causal and theoretical perspectives, (g) nursing assessment and intervention, and finally (h) implications for practice, education, and research in nursing.
